The Science of Black Hair by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy is a comprehensive reference book on black hair care. I purchased this book several months ago and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It helped me to 'round out' my hair care regimen and fill in some of the 'gaps' in my
understanding/knowledge and therefore my regimen. This book goes into
just enough of the "science" of hair car to give the reader the
scientific basis/foundation and reasoning for the information
presented. e, especially black hair care but not enough to overwhelm
the "non-tech" person. I enjoy a bit of science and the challenge to
understand what is presented in these scientific concepts and I think
that is why I enjoyed this book. This book is not just for
naturalistas. She talks about the needs of relaxed hair also.
Now maybe you all knew about this but I'm just finding out and am MOST excited about is that the author, Audrey Davis-Sivasothy, is now on youtube!!!!! She is making videos based on the information presented in this book with animations and diagrams and lecture explaining and simplifying the concepts presented in her book. She encourages questions and comments from her viewers on the info. presented in the vids.
So, if you don't have the book these youtube videos can serve as a sort of "watch-before-you-buy" kind of deal.
If you do have the book, these videos can help to answer any questions you may have lingering and deepen your understanding of the structure, needs and how to care for "Black Hair".
I think it's wonderful for Audrey to make herself available and accessible to her readers and the black haircare community in this way.
So go by and take a gander to see if this can help you in your haircare journey!
Here is a link to a blog post of mine that shows how incorporating some of the principles in this book helped to enhance my haircare regimen early on in my natural hair journey. Some of the products have change and the frequency with which I use them but this is still basically what I do.
